40. Shipwreck

smalti on board, 2012This is my first mosaic truly conceived and executed as an art piece.  Over the past several months, I’ve been reading books about mosaic techniques and current mosaic artists.  And I noticed that so many of the artists place the tesserae very tightly onto their works.

This piece began as a pencil sketch onto art board, and then cutting, trimming and directly placing the smalti using a ready-made thinset. The grout is a mixture of sand, cement and lampblack milk paint.

  1. It may interest you that the city of Vancouver has a number outdoor permanent mosaic art pieces.

    • Thanks for the tip. I will be sure to see them the next time I’m in Vancouver.
